La Linea Mayor Suggests Toll for Gibraltar
The PP Mayor, Alejandro Sánchez, has ordered a study into the legality of the idea be carried out. Cash strapped La Linea Town Hall has come up with the idea of charging a toll on those who want to cross into Gibraltar. He argues that ‘millions of visitors cross his town to get into the British colony’, and that most of Gibraltar’s income comes from visitors from Spain. "Meanwhile", he went on, "we have 10,000 unemployed in La Linea". The Mayor said he was going to march the 20 kilometres to the Central Government offices in Algeciras on July 30th to demand "a structural solution" for his town.

An excellent idea but only of course when every other EU country imposes the same charges. Naturally all those living in Spain & working in Gibraltar will love it when they have to cough up every day (maybe even twice a day). Whoever thought up this idea obviously has a very narrow outlook on life & needs to get some worldly travel experience before coming up with such daft ideas. Don't we all rely on one another & trade with one another especially in Europe?

Looks like the true intentions of the Common market are really coming to the fore where individual countries are trying to force their wills upon others within the EU. Gibraltar is part of the UK and is represented by a UK MP. The Gibraltar residents have voted overwhelmingly to continue to be part of the UK, as they shouild be able to in a democratic State and much as I love spain, this is very wrong.
A toll would only be moral and legal if it aplied to travel between all EU States which would negate a major part of the agreement for which the EU was created. So all of us who have the moral high ground should write to the MEP responsiblke to ensure that thsi does not happen,

Even toll roads within a State are only allowed when there is an alternative route that can be easily taken.

Perhaps if the Mayor of La Linea and his fellow councillors managed their finances properly they wouldn't need to charge a toll. The last time I went to Gibraltar there was a demonstration by local workmen and women who haven't been paid for the work they have done for the council because the money has been diverted elsewhere!?!? When will the Spanish grow up and realise that corruption and theft doesn't work!! Now they want to charge a toll so that they can replace the money that has been embezzled from the council. La Linea needs a new Mayer, one with brains.

I was appalled to see the Uk's police "army" storming over Yorkshire complete with Snipers. They seemed to be better equipped than the British Army so I asked for information under the freedom of information act. i was astonished and appalled to discover that the level of arming the UK police and what equipment is issued is left entirely up to the local Chief Officers. The Home Office and the Government have no control or supervision. I have been unable to find out how this was legislated but it's scary!
As a supplementary question, I asked how many unmarked police cars there were and what was there purpose. THe Home Office "does not know". It's not up to them!
David  - Police & their Guns   |2010-07-27 12:10:33
John in Banus seems to believe that the police should be armed with peashooters & catapults or perhaps even guns approved by some office desk-bound pen pusher. I'd give the police my every possible backing to use their wealth of "in the field experience" in controlling ever more difficult situations. As far as unmarked cars is concerned, what's he frightened of?

Exactly what has the police in Yorkshire got to do with the Mayor of La Linea charging a toll to get onto Gibraltar? In fact what has it go to do with anything here in Spain?
Toni in Marbella  - Allan Tee   |2010-07-29 08:02:38
To my big disappointment I hear this morning that Allan has weaseled his way into the breakfast show again and of course it is boring again. It was quite entertaining in recent days with Jack and Matt, also with Jack only. Pity ! The man is so boring and has such an unpleasant voice. By the way, do we get Roy back ? He is the best. Keep Allan away from the microphone if you can.
Ann Hambrook  - Not British!   |2010-07-30 10:22:54
Maurice Boland is a complete "eejit". Why does he keep referring to the England football team as British!!!!!
Martha Hanson  - Allan   |2010-07-31 19:01:53
I agree in parts with Toni in Marbella, keep AllanTee off the airwaves. His boring input drives me to switch stations. Jack and Matt cheer the morning up and keep myself and my husband glued to the radio. Roy was good, yet, lacklustre compared to the hilarious antics of the gruesome twosome. Does anyone else agree? MH

We all love the breakfast show with the Gruesome Twosome. The best thing that happend over breakfast.
David  - Moderation   |2010-08-03 12:22:42
I don't know who if anybody, moderates these postings but it seems nobody does because we've gone from one subject to another without any link. I'd suggest TRE do something about it if they want some positive/constructive feedback Maybe like many stations, they just want to show off how much they invite the public (us) to vent off (participate or should that be pontificate) on anything they want so as to appear a more popular station.
Mark S  - OFF TOPIC!   |2010-08-04 12:08:43
I totally agree with David. The topic was about the Mayor of La Linea charging people to get to Gibraltar. That has massive implications and is far more important than a couple of nobodies presenting the breakfast show. There's no point in having this if people don't stay on topic. Perhaps TRE should go back to the Forum and then people can vent their anger over a variety of subjects.
Yanito   |2010-08-08 19:16:17
The proposed toll is illegal under EU law and he knows it. All EU citizens have an absolute right of travel throughout the EU, all they require is a passport or I/D card. They cannot be charged to excersize that right. Mayor Sanchez has flipped.
