The Night the Stars Shone on Marbella for Haiti

haiti-galaYes the stars truly came out in numbers and shone brightly at the extraordinary Gala for the orphans of Haiti organised by Talk Radio Europe boss Maurice Boland. They included one of UK’s funniest comedians Stan Boardman, singer Kenny Lynch, Ex world snooker champ Dennis Taylor and ex Welsh football captain Mike England who flew in especially for the occasion. Friday the 5th got off to a shaky start… Estepona Golf’s Rory Leader had kindly offered his golf course free of charge after hearing Maurice’s appeal for help for the orphans of Haiti; the problem was that it had rained heavily days before and had all but waterlogged the course, but Darran Clark, Estepona Golf professional, said that ‘No Matter What’ the competition would go ahead. The course was so wet that Stan Boardman said he ‘Swam’ up the third fairway! But it was all played with great spirits.

La Quinta Golf was the setting for the evenings Gala. The Ballroom looked sensational, with the brilliance of Nigel Davis Soto Events lighting and sound. Plus the candelabra toped tables and decorations by Laura Charles were stunning… Photographers both British and Spanish were in abundance as was Antena 3 Television. This was the first Ex Pat gala that a major Spanish TV crew turned up at, and they were so blown away that they are going to dedicate time to the gala on national TV. So what was it like?  Here are some of the reports written by the guests themselves. First up an official statement from:

Jose Louis Hernandez, Tourist Minister representing the Marbella Town Hall:

On behalf of the Marbella Town Hall I want to express our gratitude an our sincere congratulations to Maurice Boland and the organisers of the Haiti Gala Dinner for contributing to the great reaction Marbella has shown as regards the Haiti humanitarian catastrophe.

This initiative has been the most successful one carried out in Marbella and reflects the high degree of commitment of our British an international community with the rest of our society and particularly with those going through the nightmare of devastation in Haiti.

The British and International community have shown Marbella has got a generous human hurt and that our town is a very special place to live in not only for the quality of live or our climate but also because of the human quality of our people and the British and international community in particular.

The Town Hall is proud of Maurice Boland being our fellow citizens and thanks to all those involved in the unforgettable night we lived yesterday.

Steve Jones, British Consul to Malaga:

"Both Rosslyn (vice consul) and I were really delighted to attend this special event.  This was an excellent example of solidarity at its best. The event was at a beautiful location, perfectly organised, with a delicious meal and excellent entertainment. We particularly enjoyed the mix of well established entertainers like Stan and Kenny as well as introducing new talents such as Christian and Rebecca.

The team at the British Consulate send their best wishes and congratulations to Maurice and his team for organising such a wonderful and worthwhile evening that raised a considerable amount of money to help make the lives of the people in Haiti a little bit better.

Cindy Barnes Chairwoman of Grapevine:

Oh what a night! A charity event that was without doubt a ' feel good' factor.

We were all there to raise funds for the devastation of Haiti and it's people -a worldly quest of which we played a small part.

There are many events taking place on the Costa del Sol with the same aim but as I attended this event I have to share our fabulous evening with you.

The event was organised by Maurice Boland and Estepona Golf Club and held at the elegant, newly renovated function room at the La Quinta Golf Club.

Maurice kicked in with his usual 'gift of the gab' and charm, and in a short space of time he had organised an amazing line up of Celebrity and local entertainment for the event.

What a fabulous mix, we were silenced in the sheer enjoyment of the young talent of the 'wow factor' winners ,and top tenor Stephen-Lloyd Morgan. Then we hit the dance floor with Daniel Boland, Mel Williams and the Marbella Big Band.

When the Celebrities took to the stage it was time for fun & laughter -Stan Boardman - Stan, we could never get bored man! Followed by Kenny Lynch who was on top form.  Last but not least, Maurice came up on stage with his adorable 7 month old grandson Bradley and we were all introduced to someone who clearly was grandad's favorite entertainer.

I felt that I was part of a big happy family that were eating, drinking, dancing, laughing and sharing - sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves.

Phil Langley. PLC Inter-Communications S.L.

I would like to convey my sincere thanks for the Haiti fund charity gala dinner. You must have worked extremely hard in a very short space of time to organise and present, what turned out to be a spectacular event. The entertainment was first class, the food excellent for such a large event and the whole evening must have been a great success. Congratulations!! I would imagine I will have to call you 'Sir Maurice' and bow accordingly in the very near future, every time I see you!!!

Nick Holland. Management and Promotion.

“The Talk Radio Europe Golf Tournament and Gala Dinner for Haiti has already proved to be the largest and single most successful fundraising event in Marbella and the Costas following the devastating Earthquake.

An Event that would take most months to organise; Maurice Boland defiantly forged ahead and pulled it off in just two weeks! We were among the many that more than willingly volunteered our time and resources, and it was truly an honour and privilege to be involved in an event that can not only be described as an overwhelming and phenomenal success, but surely will remain unparalleled or surpassed!

Our overriding memory, aside involvement in a spectacular evening’s entertainment, is the sheer selfless contribution made by so many who simply banded together for the cause! Truly Amazing! ”

Joan Boardman, Audience member (no relation to Stan!)

Sometimes fund-raising galas can be dull, self-congratulatory affairs but last nights' Haiti dinner was a delight in every respect. From beginning to end it was packed with extremely talented performances so diverse, from the fantastic operatic voice of Steven Lloyd-Morgan to the hilarious irreverent humor of Stan Boardman,  The young talent of the Wow Factor winners to the old rockers Mel Williams and the evergreen Kenny Lynch.  The Marbella Big Band and the Gospel Choir performed faultlessly with an added bonus of Maurice's young son Daniel who had everyone on their feet, dancing the night away.  A truly memorable evening in aid of a very worthy cause. Well Done Maurice and his team for putting on such a brilliant event at such short notice.

Maurice Boland, Organiser

I just want to express my sincere gratitude to all who helped me put this together in such short space of time… My right-hand woman, Pattie Senker, as without her this would have been almost impossible. She is an amazing woman and the bad news for her is that she will be called on to work on ALL my charities ( I can almost hear her cringe from here!!!), Nick Holland for the show co-ordination, Nigel Davis from Soto Events for the sound and lighting, Laura Charles who´s table decorations etc made the ballroom look truly majestic, Andrea from Essential Magazine for her amazing design work on posters, menus etc, and of course the entertainers : Stan Boardman, Kenny Lynch, Dennis Taylor (played golf with Mike England) Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, the legendary Mel Williams. Wow Factor winner Christian Fa with the Unity Choir (amazing), WOW Factor runner up the outstanding 15 year old Rebecca Tate who’s duet with Stephen Lloyd-Morgan singing ‘The Prayer’ didn’t leave a dry eye in the house!!! And Daniel Boland with the Marbella Big Band.  I must also thank Rory Leader and Darran Clark from Estepona Golf who let the golf course open against their better judgment, and to all 80 Golfers who braved the weather! I want to also give a big thank you to Aer Lingus for sponsoring flights, to The Euro weekly News for their media support and finally EyePrint who looked after our printing. But most importantly thank you to the public who supported this event..
