Johnny Beerling, ex-Head of BBC Radio One said of Boland: "Maurice is quite a character. His success is quite remarkable for a man who started out as a stand-up comedian. [Incorrect, but it's easy to imagine Boland in that role.] He's got it about right. He has a good awareness and understanding of what the audience needs. I admire him."

I've worked in broadcasting all my life, since leaving Sussex University as an unemployed Arts Graduate during one of the eras of the mini skirt! Swopping that for hot pants, I enjoyed whizzing around London on a motor bike interviewing rock and pop stars for the BBC World Service, and editing drama scripts for ATV out at the Elstree studios. Then I joined the British Forces Broadcasting Service for many years, working in Cologne, Malta, Cyprus and finally Gibraltar. Eventually the troops there downsized, and the Station shed many of its staff, so I became a freelancer. Meanwhile I'd swopped the motor bike for a jeep, acquired a husband and daughter, and moved to a farm in Spain in the hills behind Algeciras - where I still live.
