The airport in Dortmund, Germany, was closed down on Sunday after a plane bound for the Canary Islands skidded and came off the runway while taking off for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. None of the 165 passengers and six crew on board the Air Berline Boeing 737 were injured, and were able to leave the aircraft in the normal way by the steps.

A company spokesperson told Reuters that the pilot decided to abort the takeoff because of a ‘technical irregularity’, and a combination of snowy conditions and the aircraft’s speed then caused it to slide off the runway. The passengers were transferred to other airports.

The incident came on the same day that flight operations at all eight airports on the Canary Islands were suspended for almost half an hour after when the aviation control centre in Gando, Gran Canaria, was left without power for 22 minutes. The 43 departures which were planned during that time were put on hold, while only inbound flights which were already en route were allowed to continue to their destination.

There were delays on some flights of up two hours after the power was restored shortly before midday on Sunday.
