The Murcia mountaineer who had been missing since last Wednesday in Els Ports de Beseit, a mountainous area where the borders of three Spanish provinces meet, Tarragona, Teruel and Castellón, has been found alive.

31 year old Pedro C.J. from Sangonera La Verde was spotted by a rescue helicopter shortly after 5.30 on Monday afternoon in a ravine in Tarragona province, close to the border with Aragón. He has hypothermia and is malnourished, but is understood to be otherwise healthy, and is now in the care of staff at the district hospital in Mora de Ebro.

La Verdad newspaper reports the rescued man as an expert mountaineer with experience in the Alps and the Atlas mountains in Morocco, but said he lost sight of the sign-posted route to Beceit when he was overcome by heavy snowfall and fog last Thursday. He had a sleeping bag with him, but no change of dry clothes, and survived five days in temperatures of -5 with just the provisions he had taken with him for that day.

His brother told the paper that hearing the news of his rescue was, ‘like winning the lottery without buying a ticket’.
