Classes cancelled across the Canary Islands

Heavy rain has brought flooding and power cuts to Tenerife ad the rest of the Canary Islands. AEMET, the Spanish Metrological Agency has placed the islands on Orange Alert.

The Canary Government has issued an Emergency Level II. Councillor for the Presidency, José Manuel Ruano, said that the storm which had affected the islands on Monday had been of a sub-tropical nature.

There were flooded roads and streets, power cuts in many areas, and homes and shops were also flooded in places.
Classes have been suspended this morning across all the islands, and the AEMET, Spanish Meteorological Agency recorded 1,082 lightning strikes in just five hours.

The most affected area is the south of Tenerife.

The high winds and heavy rain on the islands will continue today and into Wednesday.
