Harriet Harmen jointly presides equality summit in Cádiz

The Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, the Spanish Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, and the British Minister for women and equality, Harriet Harmen, are in Cádiz today, Wednesday, to chair a summit of European Ministers responsible for equality across the union.

Top level politicians from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Denmark are all expected to attend.

The Spanish delegation will be boosted by the Minister for Housing, Beatriz Corredor and the Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia.

An official statement said the object of the summit, which comes as part of the events for Spain’s presidency of the EU, is to ‘give a new impulse to equality as political value’.

Events continues in Cádiz on Thursday with the Beijing +15 Women’s Forum, which will be opened by the Director for Equality from the European Commission, Belinda Pyke, and the President of the Equality Commission of the European Parliament, Eva Britt.
