A British man in court in Las Palmas on Wednesday denied that he had sexually abused a boy who was 11 years old at the time, at his home in Maspalomas, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, on Gran Canaria.

Named in reports with the initials D.M. he told the court, via a translator, that at no time did he approach the child, or take his clothes off in front of him. He claims that the boy rang his bell and came into his home as he was busy cooking a Mexican meal expecting friends. The boy sat on the sofa and asked him if he was homosexual, to which he replied ‘No’. Then the boy said his father was in the street and he ran out. The British man said any other version of events made at the time was the result of a mis-translation.

But the prosecution claims that the boy’s statement is ‘believable and coherent’ and claimed that ‘everything indicated’ that the alleged sexual abuse ‘was not the invention of the child’.

The child said he had seen the man naked on several occasions and he was often calling him over to his home. The boy says that on the day of the incident the British man had spoken to him in Spanish and forced him into his home.

The boy’s mother told the court she had the impression that the British man liked youngsters.

The incident dates from July 1 2007, the victim is now 13 and the accused faces a possible 14 year prison sentence, as the case awaits sentence.
