Six Welsh soldiers on holiday on Lanzarote have caused a riot in a local restaurant on the Costa Teguise. Diario La Provincia reports that after stealing a bottle of wine when challenged they started to insult and attack staff.

Tables and chairs were thrown and bottles broken in the violence despite the fact that there were children dining with their families in the restaurant at the time.

Four of those attacked needed hospital treatment after the attack in the ‘La Vaca Loca’ Argentinean restaurant on Saturday night.
The Guardia Civil were called with the Britons then accused of resisting arrest and again attacking the agents.

Declarations started to be taken on Monday by the Court Four in Arrecife and the soldiers are being held in custody for now. They faces charges of causing injury, resisting authority, and causing damage estimated at 5,000 € to the establishment. After hearing their statements the judge in Instruction Court Four in Lanzarote ordered they be held in prison.

The victims of the aggression have meanwhile written a letter to Gordon Brown. It has been published in the local media and asks the British Prime Minister to note that the discipline handed down to these soldiers has not been adequate. They ask him to carry out a full investigation and ask why they have had to tolerate such violence in a quiet place such as Lanzarote.
