After the partying the night before the winning actors had a hangover visit to the Moncloa Palace on Monday to meet the Prime Minister and his wife.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and his wife Sonsoles Espinosa were joined by the Minsgter for Culture, Ángeles González Sinde at the reception, but the actors from the Best Film of the year, ‘Celda 211’ did not turn up. Best Actor winner from the same film, Luis Toser, is quoted as saying he ‘had better things to do’.

Zapatero said the history of Spanish cinema is also the history of Spain and the grand Spanish films had been recognised for their contribution to universal cinema.
He said Spanish film was enjoying an extraordinary creative health, and 2009 had seen an increase in the number of spectators for the first time since 2004, thanks in grand part to national productions.

Both the Prime Minister and director, Álex de la Iglesia, defended the fight to protect the owners rights on the Internet.

The anecdote of the reception was Alejandro Almenábar’s mobile phone which went off during the Prime Minister’s speech. Almenábar now has 36 Goyas to go with his 38 years.

Meanwhile it has been revealed that the Goya ceremony saw its largest television audience ever on Sunday night, broadcast live and with no breaks for ads on TVE. Hosted by the Catalan comedian Andrés Buenafuente, the gala was watched by 4,656,000.
