The Prosecutors’ Office has called for a 12 year nine month prison sentence for a British man who pretended to be the Captain of a boat in the port of Las Palmas and, as a consequence, committed continual frauds as well as trying to help a woman and two Ethiopian sailor enter Spain illegally.

Europa Press reports that the case against 49 year old P.O. will get underway in the Sixth Section of the Provincial Court at 0930am on Monday. The man, who called himself Captain O’Connell, has no previous record but there is a European Search warrant outstanding against him from the French authorities. He has been held on remand in Las Palmas since February 13th last year after arriving in December of 2008.

Defence lawyers are reported to claim that the accused suffers a bipolar condition which ‘significantly affects his mental facilities’.
