Bosnian war criminal arrested in Altea
The man known as ‘The Monster of Grbavica’, (a district of Sarajevo), Veselin Vlahovic, who is accused of genocide and the murder of more than a hundred women and children, as wall as rape and torture in the Balkan war, has been arrested near his home in Altea, Alicante on Monday.
His arrest came as part of a police investigation into an organised criminal gang involving citizens from Eastern Europe who have been carrying out burglaries and violent thefts in Spain.
The arrest came as police realised that he was trying to escape, having noticed their presence. After putting up a fight he was finally arrested and found to be carrying false Belgium papers.
Born in Montenegro in 1969, Vlahovic, has three outstanding international warrants and two in Spain, after escaping from prison in Podgorica in June 2001.
He is thought to have been involved in a shooting at a brothel in Tarragona in Spain in November 2004, and is linked to a burglary in Salou in April 2005 in which a baby was intoxicated with a chemical spray.
He has already been sent to prison on remand and refused bail by the judge in Instruction Court 7 in Dénia.
