Lowest crime rate for a decade in Spain
Spain registered the lowest crime rate for a decade in 2009.
Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, appeared in Congress on Tuesday to give the latest data which shows, for the year to June, that there were 47 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants – far lower than the European average of 70.4.
The number is put together with the Euro barometer, and shows that personal safety is not considered a problem by the Spanish people.
It’s the lowest rate for a decade and nearly two points down on 2008.
The Minister underlined that you also have to take changes in the Penal Code into account, and that new crimes have swelled the numbers, giving domestic violence as an example of that, now considered a crime, whereas before it was a misdemeanour.
