Microsoft calls for clarity from Telefónica
Microsoft has called on Telefónica for more clarity on who it will charge for the use of its networks. The Deputy President for Microsoft in Western Europe, Rosa María García, said she wanted to know who Telefóncia intends to charge, the search providers or the consumers.
It comes after an initial proposal from Telefónica talks of charging a type of rent to search engines, such as Google, for their use of bandwidth. Telefónica Chairman, César Alierta, spoke of the plan some days ago, but Microsoft has said, perhaps thinking of its own Bing search engine, that charging search engines will not benefit anybody.
The Spanish Government has this week done a U turn in their comments on whether Google should face a charge or not, now abandoning earlier calls for charges to be made.
