Spanish health service taking 500 days to pay suppliers in some regions
El País reports today that the Spanish health service has delayed its payments for drugs and health material to 500 days because of a lack of money. The paper says that the regional health services across the country owe a total of more than 5 billion in health materials and drugs alone, with the regions of Andalucía, Madrid and Valencia leading the list of top debtors.
Despite a 60 day legal limit on payments the three regions of Cantabria, Murcia and the Baleares are already taking more than 500 days to pay. Cueta and Melilla are the only areas to pay within the legal limit.
The paper calculates that the health service needs 12 billion € more a year to sustain it.
