Ibiza hotelier accused of massive fraud

The 66 year old Catalan businessman, Fernando Ferré Cardó, was ordered to prison without bail on Tuesday accused of different fiscal crimes including an alleged fraud worth 14 million €. He had been in a private clinic under police guard since Friday, claiming that he was suffering heart problems.

Ferré is the largest hotelier on Ibiza and owns more than 50 hotels on the island, some 20% of the low price offer from the Grupo Playa Sol, and employing some 1,200 people in the high season.
He has to find civil bail of 80 million € to cover any possible payments to the State he may be found to be owing, because of his alleged tax evading activities, social security fraud, and crimes against the rights of his employees, many of whom are attracted to the island from Eastern Europe.

The prosecutors have uncovered some 200 companies under his direct control.
