Gay row in the Corpus celebrations in Granada
The NOS gay rights association has presented a complaint in the courts in Granada about one of this year’s traditional quintilla rhymes sung during the Corpus celebrations in the city, because of its homophobic content.
El turismo homosexual
Promove Diputacíon
Dicen que mueve un pastón
Contento está mi Pascual
Que es un poco maricón
which roughly translates:-
The provincial Government promotes gay tourism, they say it brings in lots of money. My friend Pascual is happy – he’s a bit of a poof’
The Partido Popular councillor for Culture, Juan García Montero, said that presenting the complaint was a mistake, and that things had got mad. He noted the rhyme was chosen by a jury.
Other groups in the City Hall, including the PSOE and IU have supported the Nos association.
The Colega gay association also made a protest to the council, considering that the insulting word ‘Maricón’ had no place in the Corpus and above all as it was financed by the City Hall who also exhibits the rhymes in public spaces.
Finally the PP councillor said that the word would be removed and he apologised in the name of the City Hall for those who may have been offended.
The Corpus procession takes place in Granada on Thursday.
