The Ex President of Congress, a post which can be compared to that of the Speaker in the UK, Félix Pons Irazazábal, has died at the age of 68.

He presided over the lower chamber of parliament for nine years from 1986, and had been admitted for treatment for what is described as a serious illness to the hospital in Palma de Mallorca.

He will be remembered not only as a key politician from the Baleares, but also as a key player in Spain’s transition to democracy, a Socialist passionate about politics, he joined the party in 1975. A lawyer and law professor, he was born in Palma in 1942, and also acted as Minister for Territorial Administration in the Felipe González Government in 1985.

His loves outside politics were windsurfing, reading, classical music and football; he leaves a wife, Carme Aguirre Ferrer, and three children.
