After 150 years history the Barcelona bird market has closed today, Monday, in the famous Ramblas as it no longer meets animal protection legislation.

The Barcelona bird market has been a long-time attraction to tourists visiting the city and at its peak attracted as many as 30 breeders.

The new law demands a minimum of 40 cubic metres and none of the dealers can meet that requirement, especially in the city centre setting. They have lost the battle after six years of fighting with the City Hall and as they keep their posts will change to selling souvenirs, ice creams or local arts and handicrafts.
