Madrid commuters spend a week in hold ups on average
Workers who commute in Madrid spent a total of 81 million hours last year in hold ups, and that works out on average to another week on holiday, but stuck in the car. It’s estimated the hold ups also cost Madrid businesses 839 million € a year.
The number comes in a report on public transport and the recession which has just been published and which shows that with the recession, use of public transport fell by 5% over the 12 months.
The City Hall wants to promote the bike, 262 kms of bike lanes are to be built, and walking to work, but note too that more than 10% of new vehicle registrations in Madrid are now for motorbikes and mopeds.
In a separate study Madrid has been declared as the 9th worst city for traffic in the world.
Worst places are Mexico and Beijing while the best capital to drive is Stockholm.
