Mayor of Almuñécar in court on Monday
Juan Carlos Benavides, the Mayor of Almuñécar who is now in the Coalición Andalucista party, is in Penal Court 1 in Motril on Monday, facing a possible two years in prison and a ten year ban from office.
The prosecutor has requested that sentence for a town planning crime which relates to the construction of a covered sports centre in La Herradura.
The prosecution contends that the project for the building was approved in 2005 in the full knowledge that the land was not buildable.
