The Prime Minister and the President of the Catalan Government have agreed on a strategy to reduce the tension over the Catalan Statute, following the ruling against sections of it from the Constitutional Court after four years deliberation.

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and José Montilla are keen to keep the peace between the PSOE Socialist party and PSC, Catalan Socialist Party, and the idea will be approved in parliament, both in Madrid and Barcelona.

The resolution admits ‘the bad feeling created in Cataluña’, proclaims the compliance with the ruling from the court, but also proposes strengthening the Statute by legislative changes. It will be voted on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the two men are planning to meet at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid.

Zapatero is looking for support for his strategy from the rest of the party, as the Federal Committee meets on Saturday to start the selection process of candidates for the regional elections in 2011. Reports indicate he will remind them that the current situation comes from the PP appeal placed against the Statute four years ago, and he will insist that the region ‘develops the potential of self government’.
