The Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, has denied reports in Monday’s El Mundo newspaper which said that he had ordered a stop of Spanish patrols in the waters surrounding Gibraltar at distance of 1.5 miles.

Speaking at a summer course in Santander, the Minister said ‘No instructions had been given to remove anyone from anywhere’.

El Mundo had reported that the latest complaints from London had resulted in an order to the Spanish Guardia Civil not to go any closer than 1.5 miles from Gibraltar, with the paper claiming the order was verbal and not written.

Rubalcaba did admit to recent ‘tensions’ between Spain and Gibraltar following a spate of incidents. The latest on Friday saw the British carrying out target practice ‘knowing that it was the Dia del Carmen, and that many Spanish craft would be on the water’.

The minister insisted that any problems would be solved by dialogue.
