Scientists investigating jellyfish off Dénia
An investigation is underway into the high numbers of a tropical jellyfish which has a particularly painful sting, and which has started to appear in large numbers off the coast of Dénia.
Alicante University has said the arrival of the ‘carybdea marsupialis’ on the Raset beach and others, has been ‘sudden’ and ‘unusual’.
A touch from one of the jellyfish tentacles is said to feel like an electric shock. In 2008 the local Red Cross attended to 2,500 people who suffered stings between June and August on the single beach, next to Dénia port.
Scientists are looking at the effects of temperature on the creatures, but for now don’t think that this year will see the numbers seen in 2008.
