The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the Socialist leader of the Catalan Generalitat Government, José Montilla, met today in the Moncloa Palace for the first time since the Constitutional Court rejected elements of the Catalan Statute 24 days ago.

The meeting between the two socialists lasted for more than two hours, durintg which time it is understood they did not speak about any possible reform to the Spanish Constitution.

The conversation was centred on trying to find a way to develop the Statute, given the Constitutional Court’s recent rulings, and to agree a calendar on the way ahead.

After the meeting Montilla told the press ‘Sapin cannot close her eyes to Cataluña’, and insisted on the idea that Cataluña is a nation. He said he now expected political changes from the Prime Minister, but that he had no timeline for that. He said he was ‘reasonably satisfied’ with the meeting.

Central Government sources said that Zapatero had gone to the meeting with a ‘constructive spirit’.
