Following the public spat earlier in the week between the two riders with the main chance of winning this year’s Tour de France, Spain’s Alberto Contador and the Luxembourg rider, Andy Schleck, when the Spaniard took the lead when his rival’s chain fell off, breaking ride etiquette in the process, it was clear the two friends had more than made up when the Spaniard waited for his rival to cross the line just ahead of him after the main final climb up the Tourmalet Pass.

Contador said ‘Andy was really strong. I knew if I could stay with him, I could get through the day. The truth is I had good legs.’, while Schleck has said he will keep fighting.

The gentlemanly conduct of Contador was appreciated by President Sarkozy who greeted the Spaniard at the winning line with the words ‘Bravo España!’.

It means the Spaniard remains 8 seconds ahead overall and, barring a fall, looks like winning his third consecutive Tour de France.
