Suffering to the end with poor form and illness, Spain’s Alberto Contador said it was an ‘enormous liberation’ to reach the winning line in Paris on Sunday.

The 27 year old from Pinto near Madrid said he had suffered greatly to win what is his third Tour de France, (2007,2009,2010) explaining that he found the time trial on Saturday particularly hard. He admitted that he was not at the physical level he would have wished.

He was joined on the podium by his great rival Andy Schleck, and Denis Menchov.

Britain’s Mark Cavendish won the last stage of the race, showing for the 5th time that he is quickest in the sprint.
