A diesel slick has forced the closure of the Albufereta beach in Alicante on Sunday. The 100m long slick was spotted first by the Red Cross when 80m off the coast after a tanker swilled her motors offshore illegally.

12 swimmers had to be treated for sore throats after bathing as the red flag was raised, and one Civil Protection worker was transferred to a local clinic.

The coastguard launched a search to try to establish the boat responsible, but información newspaper reports that no culprit was found.

A check on the cleanliness of the sand is to be made after the slick is cleared and the beach is expected to reopen later on Monday.

Update - Monday 1pm - The beach is now reported to be reopen.
