Óscar, the first patient in the world to have a full face transplant has been presented to the press by the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona.
It came as he was allowed home on Monday, four months after the operation took place. His initial injuries came following him accidentally shooting himself in the face.

Still finding it difficult to talk, and suffering from extreme sensitivity across his new face, Óscar is still on a diet of whisked food.

‘Thank you, I am very content and happy because today I start a new life, like I had before’, he said, going on to thank the medical team led by Doctor Joan Pere Barret.

He appeared before the press because he considered that it was his responsibility to publically thank the surgeons and donors involved and to encourage other patients.

His definitive ‘new look’ will not be seen for another year to 18 months, by which time he will recover between 80% and 90% of his facial functions.

Óscar said he was most looking forward to going fishing, which is his favourite hobby.
