AENA, the Spanish Airport Authority, has announced it is to finance the sound-proofing of 1,400 new homes which have been built close to the El Altet airport in Alicante.

Alicante City Hall has confirmed the news, with the councillor for town planning, Alejandro Pérez, explaining the details to some of the residents affected. The so-called acoustic fingerprint of the airport is to be extended, mostly in El Altet itself, although also to include parts of Torrellano and Urbanova.

Residents who can benefit will receive a letter in the post informing them of the steps to take.

So far AENA has sound proofed 693 homes in the area at a cost of close to 29 million €.

New monitoring equipment is also being installed at the airport to check that aircraft stick to landing and takeoff paths. Similar equipment is already in use in Málaga and Palma. The system will be fully operational at El Altet within a year. If a plane is found to stray from the official paths, the company faces a fine.
