Madrid’s Deputy Mayor, Manuel Cobo, has removed the appeal he had placed earlier this week against the political spying case against him being archived in the Madrid Provincial Court. He had claimed that the judge had ignored evidence, and El País has been this week highlighting the sarcastic comments of the judge, Carmen Valcarce at times during the case. The case was archived as she considered that there was no indication of anyone making money from the matter.

Cobo says he is withdrawing his appeal on the orders of the PP General Secretary, María Dolores de Cospedal. His claim was that the PP controlled regional government had organised the surveillance, and earlier Aguirre’s Director of Security, Sergio Gamón, resigned from his post because of his implication in the affair.

Cospedal admitted that pressure had been put on Cobo, but denied that the PP wanted to hide anything, given that the case had proved that surveillance has indeed taken place, although it considered that no crime had been committed.
