Primary elections to decide on the Socialist candidate in Madrid
The PSOE Socialist Party in Madrid has decided to use primary elections to decide on its candidate to head the Madrid regional elections next year.
It comes after the party leader in the region, Tomás Gómez, refused to stand down in favour of the Minister for Health, Trinidad Jiménez, who the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapaetero, had indicated he wanted to see stand.
A meeting between the Prime Minister and Tomás Gómez is reported to have ended in argument when Zapatero rejected the suggestion that Jiménez be number two on the list.
Gómez is unwilling to see three years work in the post come to nothing, while the party big-wigs are trying to present a unified front against the Partido Popular who are, by all the forecasts, set for another overall majority in the region.
