The Minister for Health, Trinidad Jiménez, has announced this (Monday) morning, that she will be standing as candidate to lead the Socialist party at the Madrid regional elections next year.

‘I present myself knowing that Gómez has more possibilities than I do’, said Jiménez, adding that she will be the candidate if the party activists so decide, and that she was standing ‘for the Madrileños and the Socialists’.

She will dispute the position with the party’s leader in the Madrid region, Tomas Gómez, who refused to step aside when asked to do so by the Prime Minister last week.

It is known that José Luis Rodíguez Zapatero considers Jiménez to be the better candidate, despite the fact she lost an election to the post of Madrid Mayor back in May 2003.

With the two choices it throws the Madrid party into primary elections which are set to be held on October 3.
