Six arrested as gangs of thieves which targetted tourists broken up
Six people have been arrested for robbing tourists when on the AP-7 motorway in Cataluña. The technique used is not a new one; they would attract the attention of the tourists, indicate they had a puncture, and when the tourists had stopped would use the confusion of the situation to rob them. The group is accused of carrying out as many as 70 thefts in this way.
The Catalan regional police, Los Mossos d’Esquadra, have increased their patrols in the summer and have been working in conjunction with security guards in motorway service areas. They think the six arrested are members of two different groups, and are residents of Cornellà de Llobregat, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Barcelona.
Some 100 stolen items are now being identified and returned to tourists by post.
