Spain Papers Review - Friday August 20 2010
El Mundo has a photo of a column of armoured vehicles from the United States army crossing in the early hours from Iraq to Kuwait. The paper headlines that the early exit of the United States has destabilised the Iraqi Government. It says the press in Baghdad has speculated that a coup could take place against the Prime Minister Al Maliki.
Público dedicates its front page to the withdrawal which it describes as a false ending of the war by the United States. It goes on to describe ‘the failure of the invasion’ and sais that Obama has withdrawn the last combat troops from a country which is devastated and immersed in chaos. It notes that 7,000 mercenaries will strengthen the security.
El País has the same photo as El Mundo and headlines that the United States has withdrawn its last combat brigade from Iraq. It says the army will keep a small force until the end of the month and other 50,000 soldiers for training exercises until 2011.
El Mundo notes that the PP leader Mariano Rajoy has defended the visit by previous PP leader, José María Aznar, to Melilla in the face of what he called the ‘total abdication of Zapatero’. The paper says that Spain’s Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, has said that there is ‘no conflict and no crisis, while the PSOE Deputy Zarrías has told the ex Prime Minister to spend his time on his muscles.
Público says that Rajoy has followed Aznar’s script and used Melilla to attack Zapatero, and also notes that in the PSOE primaries in Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre’s PP has launched xenophobic attacks on Jiménez and Lissavetzky.
El País reports comments from the Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, who has said that Aznar and Rajoy carry out ‘headbutt politices’.
El Mundo reports that the German economy will grow by 3% and that this will have a knock on effect on interest rates.
El País notes that two years after the tragic accident in Barajas airport in Madrid, the central computer in the Spanair company where the plane faults are recorded has been contaminated by a malicious virus.
El Mundo notes that the Vatican has criticised the expulsion of the Romanian gypsies which has now got underway in France. The first 70, ‘volunteers’ according to the French Government, arrived in Bucharest on Thursday.
Público says that Sarkozy set up a spectacle to deport 110 gypsies while El País tells us that Romania is demanding a European plan for the expelled gypsies.
El Mundo reports that the leader of the Argentinean collective on the Baleares, admitted to the Judicial Police on Thursday that the Unió Mallorquina party paid him a wage during the regional and local election campaigns in 2007, in return for obtaining votes.
And finally,
Público reports that 90% of the air traffic controllers have supported the new peace deal with AENA, the Spanish Airports authority.
