Spain sees a recovery in tourist numbers for July
The number of tourists to arrive in Spain during July was up 4.5% on the same month last year, thanks to visitors from the United States, up 32.1% at 146,980, Switzerland up 24.7% and the Scandinavian countries, up 16.7%.
The month saw 6.97 million arrivals, the largest increase seen for 26 months, and represented the third consecutive month to show an improvement.
The number of British tourists recovered at 1.6 million, up 1% on last year and ending a series of monthly falls which started in May 2008, while there was a 0.4% fall in the number of French which is being put down to strike action by French air traffic controllers.
German arrivals were up 1.9% at 1.09 million, and there were more Italians, up 5.2% and Dutch, up 6.2%.
Falls were seen in the number of Irish, down 5.1%, Portuguese, down 5.2% and Belgians, down 3.2%.
Regarding the different areas of the country, Cataluña and the Baleares saw the most international visitors in July at 1.8 million, up 12.4% on last year, Andalucia saw 930,876 tourists, up 2.4%, while Valencia saw a 0.5% improvement. Visitor numbers to the Canaries were up 5.8% compared to July last year, but 6.3% fewer decided to visit Madrid.
In the first seven months of the year Spain has welcomed more than 30 million international tourists, down 0.4% on the first seven months in 2009, which in turn was 10.3% down on 2008.
Meanwhile the number of overnight stays in hotel rooms by international tourists in Spain grew by 11.1% in July, while national travellers were also up by 1.8%. It resulted in an overall improvement of 7.2% as prices continued their falls and were on average 0.8% cheaper than a year ago.
