The two Spanish aid workers who have been released from their Al Qaeda captors in the Maghreb, Albert Vilalta and Roque Pascual, are now back home in Barcelona.

On their arrival at the El Prat airport in the early hours of Tuesday, they said that the support from Spain motivated them to resist such a savage kidnapping. They were welcomed on the tarmac by family, friends, and colleagues from the Non-Governmental Organisation, ‘Barcelona Acció Solidaria’, and on their request, the landing of the plane was not filmed.

They said that they had been treated ‘correctly’, although they noted that their lives had been turned upside down for nine months. Pascual admitted to losing 22 kilos and Vilalta is still recovering from being shot in the leg at the start of the ordeal.

Reports indicate the release came after one of the kidnappers who had been captured was exchanged for the men, after an early payment of a ransom.
