Unemployment rises in Spain in August
Unemployment rose in August by 61,083 in Spain ending a four month run of falls and taking the total number registered in INEM offices as out of work to 3,969,661, according to the National Statistics Institute.
The numbers show that over the past 12 months unemployment has risen by 340,581, or 9.3%.
Despite the increase the number is better than that seen in 2009.
August only saw a fall in unemployment in the agriculture sector, but increased in all others including the services sector, construction and industry. The services sector now accounts for 62% of the total unemployment.
Meanwhile the Spanish Social Security system lost 131,858 affiliates over the month, ending six months of previous increases. The number of people now paying into the system is 17,716,464, 1.58% lower than a year ago, according to the Ministry for Employment. The fall is being put down to the end of seasonal contracts, and activity in the education sector.
Secretary of State for Social Security, Octavio Granado, noted the fall this August was the smallest seen in the last five years.
Speaking for the Government, Minister for Tax and the Economy, Elena Salgado, said the numbers were not bad when looked at in a seasonal context. She claimed that the Government’s measures were having an effect and recommended the unemployed to ‘train to the full, in increase their employability’.
