Hundreds of Thousands of Non-Compliant V16 Lights Sold Ahead of Spain’s 2026 Law Change

With less than three months to go before the DGT’s new connected V16 rule takes effect, experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of older, non-compliant V16 lights have already been sold in Spain.

These non-connected models—often cheaper and widely available online—will no longer be legal from 1 January 2026. The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has made it clear: only V16 connected lights (known as DGT 3.0-approved devices) that send your vehicle’s location to emergency services will be authorised.

Drivers who continue using non-compliant devices risk fines of up to €200.

“From 1 January 2026, only V16 lights that transmit the vehicle’s geolocation in real time to the DGT 3.0 platform will be authorised,”
Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT)

To stay safe and compliant, make sure your V16 device:
✅ Is DGT 3.0 connected (sends your location automatically)
✅ Shows its official certification number
✅ Can be verified on the DGT website

With hundreds of thousands of outdated lights still in circulation, now’s the perfect time to upgrade to a DGT-approved connected V16 light—ensuring both your safety and compliance on Spanish roads.
