Pope Leo appealed to world leaders on Thursday to treat migrants more humanely, warning in a visit to Spain’s Canary Islands, that history would condemn those ‌who allowed people fleeing war or poverty to suffer.

In what he called an “appeal to the conscience” of politicians in Europe and the international community, the first U.S. pope said that “human dignity has no passport and does not lose its value when crossing a border.”

“We cannot grow accustomed to counting the dead,” said the pope at Gran Canaria’s Port of Arguineguin.

“May history not accuse us of turning the pain of those who suffer into a common sight along our shores,” he urged thousands gathered near a memorial to migrants lost at sea. “Sooner or later, it will be known whether we protected life or whether we yielded to indifference.”

A British couple have been detained on Spain’s Costa del Sol after allegedly leaving their three young children alone in a hotel room while they went out partying, with local reports claiming their six-month-old baby later tested positive for cocaine.

The Spanish National Police detained the parents, a 41-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, in the early hours of Thursday after officers were called to a hotel in Benalmadena

According to police sources, the couple’s three children – aged four, two and six months – were discovered without adult supervision.

The alarm was raised after hotel staff reportedly found two of the children unattended in the resort’s communal areas and alerted the authorities.

The children have been placed under the protection of the Andalusian regional government’s child welfare services.

The couple were expected to remain in police custody pending their appearance before a judge, although officials had not confirmed the timing of any court hearing.

Real Madrid has signed José Mourinho to a three-year deal as its new manager until  2029, the club announced on Thursday, marking a sensational return for the two-time Champions League winner to the Spanish capital.

Mourinho is set to join the club on July 13, when the preseason officially begins

Mourinho, who most recently managed Benfica, returns to the Santiago Bernabéu amid a turbulent, trophyless and, at times, chaotic period in Madrid that has had the global media baffled and madridistas up in arms.
