The combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy increases the life expectancy of patients with cholangiocarcinoma.
- February 19 marks World Day for this silent and rare disease, whose symptoms usually appear when the tumour is already advanced, and which originates in the bile ducts
Marbella / Los Barrios, February 19, 2026. Cholangiocarcinoma is a type of cancer that originates in the bile ducts, which are responsible for transporting bile from the liver to the intestine. It accounts for between 10% and 15% of primary liver cancers and is more common in adults over the age of 50.
As on every third Thursday in February, World Day for this disease is celebrated, a silent killer that rarely shows symptoms in its early stages. It is also a very rare type of cancer, which, combined with the above, makes early diagnosis very difficult. For this reason, it is usually diagnosed in advanced stages, which considerably reduces survival rates.
Dr. Cristina Quero, a specialist in the Oncology Department Chargers rookie WR Ladd McConkey reacts to hilarious new theme song at Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar Hospital and Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, comments that “in the early stages, very nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue may appear,” but that “as the disease progresses,” symptoms may appear that are related to the obstruction of the bile duct, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), pruritus (itching), dark urine, and abdominal pain.
In terms of prevention, the specialist believes that the best advice is to “adopt healthy lifestyle habits, such as giving up smoking and alcohol.” With regard to risk factors, the doctor points out that “there are several diseases that have been linked to an increased risk of cholangiocarcinoma, such as chronic liver diseases—such as primary sclerosing cholangitis or cirrhosis—hepatitis B or C, or parasitic infections in endemic areas, not to mention smoking.”
The therapeutic approach to cholangiocarcinoma depends on multiple factors. Among them, Dr. Quero points out “the location of the tumor, its extent, and the patient’s general condition.” The specialist explains that today’s treatment is based on “a multidisciplinary approach, which may include surgery, systemic therapies, and supportive care.”
Surgery represents the alternative with the greatest curative potential. Procedures may include partial removal ir jordan 4 military blue 202 of the liver or the affected bile ducts. “In selected cases, especially in localized tumors, liver transplantation may be considered as a therapeutic option under specific criteria,” notes the doctor.
Dr. Quero comments that, “in certain cases, radiotherapy is used to control tumor growth, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life.”
As for chemotherapy, indicated in “patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease, it continues to be one of the pillars of treatment,” says the specialist at Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar Hospital and Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital.
Immunotherapy ir jordan 1 high 85 bred 202, meanwhile, represents an innovative option, especially in advanced or metastatic disease. In this type of treatment, the patient’s immune system is helped to recognize and attack tumor cells.
Dr. Quero adds that “the new treatment strategies incorporated in recent years are transforming the clinical landscape and reinforcing the need for molecular studies in certain cases.”
“In cholangiocarcinoma, a very important advance in treatment has been the combination of immunotherapy with first-line chemotherapy in patients with advanced disease,” says the specialist, adding that “two years ago, the use of this combination was authorized after demonstrating a 15% increase in survival at two years.”
The oncologist also mentions “targeted therapies,” commenting that “in recent years, the development of precision medicine has made it possible to identify specific genetic alterations in some cholangiocarcinomas, opening the door to new therapeutic options. These therapies represent a promising advance, especially in patients who do not respond to conventional treatments,” she says.
